Subsidies are really scary

Dear Editor

While waiting at a level crossing recently, and contemplating government’s environment policies as a long, long train of oil tankers rumbled past, I was digesting the letter from Victor Hult, headlined: “Taxes scarier than climate change.” (News-Optimist, Jan. 23)

They are indeed scarier, Mr Hult, but even scarier is the number of taxpayer dollars the government gives the oil industry in the form of a subsidy. The sum is vast, as you will see if you Google “Canadian federal subsidies to oil industry.” That will really scare you!

Whether you can relate this subsidy, and our oil production, to the tax on carbon the country itself creates is another matter.
