After starting the season on a four game losing slide, home made the difference for the Battlefords AAA Stars against the Yorkton Secon Maulers.

The Stars took both games this weekend, including the home opener Saturday night, Oct. 5, by a 4-1 margin, as well as the afternoon rematch Sunday 4-3 in overtime.

The Saturday contest was a tight one until the Stars pulled it out in the third period. Mason Bueckert got the first goal for the Stars before Daitan Dmytriw responded midway through the first period.

The second period was scoreless, but the Stars broke it open with Bueckert’s second of the game. Two late goals by Carson Dobson and by Tanner Willick on a power play sealed the 4-1 win. Jackson Fellner stopped 32 of 33 in net for the Stars.

The Stars needed to come from behind in their rematch the next day. Yorkton scored three unanswered goals in the first period from Daitan Dmytriw, Kylen Taphorn and on the power play from Mason Ziola.

But the Stars came back with a goal from Curren Wintonyk-Pilot in the second period, followed by goals by Kyle Heintz and Tanner Willick in the third. Willick’s goal came with just 32 seconds remaining on the clock.

With just 1:19 remaining in overtime, Buckert got the winning goal from Ethan Grabowski and Carson Dobson to win it. Shots favoured the Stars 35-19 with Fellner getting the win in net again.

The Stars are back in action again on Saturday on the road in Moose Jaw.
