After a few days off for the Christmas holiday break, the Battlefords AAA Stars are back in action – in BC.

With league play still on hold until the new year, the Stars were in Kelowna for the Okanagan Classic AAA Tournament. The event began Dec. 28 and was scheduled to run through New Year’s Day.

The venue was the Capital News Centre in south Kelowna, where major midget teams from across western Canada and the USA were in action.

The Stars began play on the weekend with three tournament games. The opener was against the Everett Silvertips 18-under team on Saturday; the Stars lost 3-0 despite outshooting their opposition 42-28.

The Stars rebounded Sunday morning against the Thompson Blazers with a 6-3 win. Payton Kostyshyn scored twice in the second period in that game, helping the Stars to a 4-2 lead. While Thompson got one back on a power play goal in the third period, goals by Kyle Heintz and shorthanded by Nicholas Steciuk sealed the win.

The Stars were in action again that night versus the Zone All Star Team. Despite trailing 2-0 in the first period, the Stars came back with a five-goal third period to win 6-2.

The win puts the Stars in second place in tournament standings through three games, behind the Regina Pat Canadians who were unbeaten at 3-0. That meant first place was on the line when the Stars took on Regina on Monday afternoon, but the Pat Canadians ended up on top by a final score of 3-0.

The Stars were scheduled to play Team Alaska 18U on Tuesday to wrap up round robin play.
