The Battlefords AAA Stars have been eliminated from playoff contention in the Sask. Midget AAA Hockey League.

The team had been hanging by a thread until recently, but the hopes for Coach Brett Parker’s squad are now officially dashed despite two wins in the last three games. The Stars sit 15 points behind the eighth-place Saskatoon Contacts, with no hope of catching them in the playoff race.

Last Thursday, the Stars beat the Saskatoon Blazers 5-3 at Rod Hamm Memorial Arena. The Stars got a power play goal from Shayde Peterson in the first, goals from Luke Fennig and Colby Ralston in the second and two from Carson Dobson in the third.

On Saturday, the Stars began the first of two games with the Yorkton RawTec Maulers, and got off to a good start to the weekend winning 6-2. The Stars got a shorthanded goal from Nicholas Steciuk to get things rolling in the first, and Tye Scherger got a power play goal later that period.

Goals in the second from Peterson, Josh Groenwold and Quinn Strang (power play) and in the third from Ralston rounded the scoring.

But the rematch Sunday afternoon saw the Stars fall 4-3 at home. Massen Ziola’s third period goal was the difference for Yorkton. Fennig, Dobson and Groenwold were goal scorers for the Stars in the loss.

The Stars were scheduled to play Beardy’s at the Civic Centre on Wednesday; after that they have just five more games to play this season. They go to Wilcox to play Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday.
