It was not the only of the surprise of the night, but during the 39th annual banquet inducting the 2019 class of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, longtime CEO Jane Shury announced she plans to step down from that position.
Shury said she had given a lot of thought to the decision, but ultimately cited her age as the reason to step aside.
Shury said now was the time to turn over the reigns to someone younger.
“We need new young blood to carry on this organization,” Shury said.
There is no set timetable for when Shury will depart, and Shury’s departure will likely not happen right away.
The plan is to get a grant that would allow the hall to hire a young person who “loves baseball and appreciates the value of history.”
Shury also said she planned to continue to be active on the board, if elected. She also pledged to help train and advise whoever was chosen to take over.
“I’m not going to leave anybody high and dry,” said Shury.
Shury has been involved with the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum since its founding in 1983 by her late husband, David Shury.
