Making a name for themselves at winter games

The 2012 Saskatchewan First Nations Winter Games were originally scheduled to be held in the Battlefords and surrounding area with Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs hosting the event.

BATC are still hosting the event, but the venue was moved 130km down the road to Saskatoon. There was concern facilities in the Battlefords and area wouldn't be available and operating for winter sports by mid April.

Also the Battlefords wouldn't have the hotel capacity to host 3,500 youth athletes during the week, who are competing in six different sports.

Once all the rescheduling was down the events moved forward in Saskatoon and the local area athletes have represented well through the first half of the week.

On the volleyball court, the female under 14 BATC team won their first game in three sets Monday while Battlefords Tribal Council lost in two sets in the same division later that day.

Tuesday, BTC's under 14 team bounced back with two wins while BATC also won in their lone game.

Both BATC and BTC lost their first game in the female under 16 division Monday. BTC split their two games Tuesday while BATC lost their lone game.

In the under 18 female division, BATC won in two sets while BTC lost in three sets Monday. Tuesday, BTC lost twice and BATC lost once.

In the male divisions, BATC lost in the under 14 division, but won in three sets in the under 16 and 18 divisions on first day one. Tuesday, BATC under 14 lost twice, the under 16 team won in three sets and the under 18 team lost to BTC.

The only BTC team to win Tuesday was the male under 14 team in two sets. BTC under 16 and 18 both lost in three sets. The BTC under 14 team continued their winning ways with a two-set win Tuesday. BTC under 16 lost twice Tuesday.

At the hockey rink, BATC won their first game 7-0 in the atom division, lost 5-1 in the peewee division, won 5-4 in the bantam division and lost their second game 7-0, the midget team tied 4-4 and lost 6-3 and the female team lost 3-1 and tied 1-1 Monday and lost 4-1 Tuesday.

The BTC atom team lost 8-1 in their first two games and the BTC peewee team lost 7-0 in their first game.

Other results posted from earlier in the week were from broomball. The BTC bantam team won 1-0 in overtime and lost 1-0 in regulation. BATC had two 5-0 wins in the bantam division. At the midget level, BATC also won their first game by a 5-0 score. The BATC juvenile team won 4-0 in their first game.

Volleyball, hockey, broomball, 3-on-3 basketball, badminton and curling resumed later in the week with the games closing Friday.

Along with the thousands of young athletes competing in Saskatoon the travelling Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit was in Saskatoon along with the Stanley Cup Wednesday and Thursday.
