Air Cadet Sgt. Jason Reimer, who won gold in the pursuit race at the national cadet biathlon competition in Val Cartier, Que. March 3 to 8, has also earned a Jean-Philippe Le Guellec Award.

Jason earned the award in the senior category for 15- and 16-year-olds. It recognizes the female and male cadets with the highest cumulative aggregates from their individual race results during the National Cadet Biathlon Championship.

Reimer, 16, parades with No. 43 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in North Battleford. He competed in four different categories at nationals.

The cadets compete as a team and receive team and individual times. The four races they compete in are the mass start, pursuit, relay and patrol. Jason placed first in the mass start, second in the pursuit race, the team placed fourth in the relay, where Jason took top time, and the team took first place for the patrol race.

Jason skied three to five loops for a total distance of 7.5 kilometres and shot two to four times at five targets the size of a silver dollar set 49.5 metres. The area has a number of different length of laps that are used to make up the total race length.

Jean-Philippe Le Guellec joined an Air Cadet Squadron in 1999 when he was 13 years old and started doing biathlon at the St. Bruno cadet facilities the same year. Only two years after his first junior competition, he was named to the 2006 Olympic biathlon team and represented Canada at the Olympics in Torino, Italy. He also competed in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games where he finished sixth in the 10km Sprint race, his best performance to date. In 2012, he made history when he brought home the gold medal for the sprint race at the World Cup in Ostersund, Sweden.

"As the commanding officer of No. 43 RCACS the Battlefords I am very proud of the performance that he gave in order to achieve this goal," says Joyce Ptolemy.

Later this month, Jason will also be competing in the National Biathlon Competition for the civilian side of his sport.
