The top senior golfers in the province made their way to the North Battleford Golf and Country Club for the opening round of the 2017 Gold Eagle Provincial Senior Golf Championship.

On the men’s side, Ken Rodgers of Regina fired a round of three-under par 69 to take a five-shot lead over North Battleford’s Dave Wilson.

Regina’s Rick Ledingham and Biggar’s Keith Silvernagle are tied for third place and sit six shots back of Rodgers.

Three-time champion Colin Coben of Delisle and Frank Enns of Saskatoon round out the top five as they are both seven strokes off the lead.

There will also be a new champion of the men’s tournament, as last year’s winner George Janson of Saskatoon withdrew from the competition Monday.

In the women’s competition, Lloydminster’s Jo-Anne Schiller sits in first place after shooting a 10-over par round of 84, while there is a logjam for the runner-up spot with four golfers.

Saskatoon’s Cheryl Reichel, Moose Jaw’s Lorie Boyle, Warman’s Tammy Bezaire and Saskatoon’s Carol Spanks were one shot off the lead following Tuesday’s play.

Boyle, who is a seven-time provincial champion, won last year’s tournament.

The second round of play began Wednesday with the men’s field teeing off at 7 a.m., while the women’s field took to the course at 11:20 a.m.

The tournament wraps up Thursday.
