Saskatchewan Winter Games underway

After Sunday’s opening ceremonies took place in a packed Civic Centre, the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games began in full Monday with a number of events around the Battlefords.

After Sunday’s opening ceremonies took place in a packed Civic Centre, the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games began in full Monday with a number of events around the Battlefords.

It’s been a strong start for the host Rivers West team as they sit in second place in the medal standings with 14 medals, as they nabbed six golds, five silvers and three bronzes during the opening day of action.

Standing on the top of the podium were Meota’s Brook Mack (female U12 slalom), Herschel’s Jacob Fehr (male U12 slalom), Unity’s Alexis Elder (female U14 slalom), Herschel’s Nadine Fehr (female U16 slalom), Unity’s Ashton Brebner (male U16 slalom) and Lloydminster’s Devire Johnston (female -40 kg judo).

Silver medals for the district were won by Lashburn’s Gabby Schmalz (slalom U12 female), Battleford’s Jesse Jamieson (slalom U12 male), Landis’ Harley Harris (slalom U16 female), Lloydminster’s Brooklyn Bloch-Hansen (female -53 kg judo) and Battleford’s Deacon Gubbe (male 50 KG weightlifting).

Lloydminster’s Marissa Howdle (female -40 kg judo), North Battleford’s Spencer O’Neill (male 50 kg weightlifting) and Lloydminster’s Kaibrie Lumbard (synchronized swimming figures co-ed) all captured bronze medals.

Saskatoon sits on top of the medal standings after the first day with 19.

Meanwhile, the Rivers West male curling rink of skip Cody Sutherland (Rosetown), vice Doug Sroka (Maidstone), second Bruce Krepps (Maidstone) and lead Jack Reid (North Battleford) find themselves on top of the Pool B standings with a 2-0 record heading into the second day of round-robin play Tuesday.
