The Battlefords AAA Sharks began their female U18 hockey regular season this past weekend, with a home and home series with the Prince Albert Northern Bears.

While they were competitive games, the Sharks were able to get only one point out of the two games, losing in overtime 2-1 in Prince Albert Saturday and then losing 9-5 at Battleford Arena on Sunday.

In Saturday’s contest on the road, Ava Cole’s power play goal from Lacey Schneider in the second period gave the Sharks the early lead, but the Bears tied it on a goal by Sophia Zuck and an overtime goal by Paris Oleksyn won it. Yelena Zaleschuk was named the Battlefords game star for her solid performance in goal for the Sharks, stopping 24 of 26 shots. PA outshot the Sharks 26-22.

Sunday’s home opener for the Sharks saw the Bears score early and often, with three goals in the first period, three in the second and three in the third for a 9-5 win.

The Bears already had a 4-0 lead when the Sharks’ Brooklyn Salewski scored shorthanded in period two; she also got a shorthanded goal in period three. Logan Halter got the other second period goal and Madison Glynn (power play) and Mykayla Pylypow got third period goals for the Sharks.

PA outshot the Sharks on the day 35-28.

Next up on the schedule for the Sharks is a home and home with the Saskatoon Stars. They play in Saskatoon Saturday at 2 p.m. and return to Battleford Arena on Sunday; game time is 1:30 p.m. that day.
