The SJHL may not be back on the ice yet for real, but they are coming back this week — virtually.

The SJHL has announced it is planning to hold a Virtual Showcase on the Twitch streaming platform on Jan. 29 and 30. The games will also be shown on SaskTel Max TV.

The Virtual Showcase will feature the top 80 prospects in the league as selected by the SJHL Coaches Committee. The players would then be divided into four teams: the Global Ag Risk and Viterra teams for ages 16, 17 and 18, and Sherwood and SaskTel teams for those aged 18, 19 and 20.

Rosters were announced during the noon hour Monday, and as expected the Battlefords North Stars will be represented in the Showcase with three players.

The veteran Sherwood team will include Timon Prexler on defence, the only North Stars player on that roster.

The young Global Ag Risk roster will include two North Stars forwards, Steven Kesslering and Jake Southgate.

The teams will be entered into EA Sports NHL 21 and the games simulated on PlayStation 4 on Friday and Saturday. Last year, the SJHL also conducted a simulated virtual Canalta Cup playoffs which were also live-streamed on Twitch.

“This is a great opportunity to provide some positivity and entertainment in what has been a difficult period of time for many of us,” said league president Bill Chow in a statement. “This event will provide some extra exposure for our athletes which will help scouts identify names of players that they should be watching.”
