Some wheeling in dealing in SJHL

The biggest news from the SJHL wasn't the players of the week, nor was it the fact that the Battlefords North Stars dropped in the CJHL rankings. The big news this week was obviously the trade deadline.

The biggest news from the SJHL wasn't the players of the week, nor was it the fact that the Battlefords North Stars dropped in the CJHL rankings. The big news this week was obviously the trade deadline.

The deadline wasn't as busy as some may have hoped or anticipated, but some deals were made, although Humboldt stayed idle after making a number of moves throughout the season and La Ronge didn't see any offers intriguing enough to make a deal.

In the Bauer Conference, Flin Flon unloaded two players, one off their roster and another never made it there. The Bombers acquired Kody Dhaliwal from Salmon Arm of the BCHL and later flipped him to Chillwack in the BCHL for future considerations after Dhaliwal wasn't going to report to Flin Flon. The Bombers also sent Kyle Oleniuk to Weyburn for Austin Rediron, a 1994-born goalie with the Tisdale Trojans of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League and a player to be named later.

Besides the North Stars aquiring Mitch Berg and Klay Kachur, Nipawin may have made the biggest slash. The Hawks traded Alex Laird and prospects Colton Schick and Branden Scheidl to Kinderlsey for 1992-forward Wheaton King and prospect Landon Robin. King has 30 points in 35 games this season.

The bottom team in the Bauer Conference, Melfort, moved in the direction of rebuilding their roster, as they acquired Jake Daughtry and Nathan Zimbaluk from the North Stars in exchange for Berg. The Mustangs also traded 20-year-old forward Connor Bradshaw to Melville for the rights of Graham Hood and future considerations.

In the Sherwood Conference, Kindersley continued their rebuild, as they traded 1991- forward Taylor Wasden to Melville for future considerations. Melville also acquired Landon Hall from Dauphin of the MJHL for future considerations. Melville also added Sean Ashcim to the roster after he was re-assigned from Seattle in the WHL. Ashcim had five goals and four assists in 24 WHL games this season and during the 2010-11 season, Ashcim had 17 goals and 34 assists in 51 games with Melfort.

Estevan also made some deals Tuesday, as they acquired Battlefords North Stars' defenceman Zack MacLellan for future considerations. The Bruins sent Dylan Schellenberg to Camrose of the AJHL to complete the future considerations of a previous deal, which saw them acquire Connor Milligan. Estevan also traded future considerations to Spruce Grove of the AJHL for 20-year-old forward Trevor Tracy.

The teams that made no moves at the trade deadline owned the SJHL player of the week honours. The player of the week was La Ronge's Nathan Boyer. He had four goals and two assists in the three games. Kyler Hladun of La Ronge, Jesse Mireau of Melville and Yorkton's Zak Majkowski and Tyler Giebel were the runners up.

Byron Sorensen of La Ronge was the defenceman of the week. Sorensen played one semester of college hockey before returning to La Ronge this season and has picked up where he left off last season. Matt Weinsensel of La Ronge, Jeff Datoff of Niapwin, Lee Christensen of Melville and Kelly Leismeister of Yorkton were the runners up.

The goaltender of the week was Humboldt's Matt Hrynkiw. He posted two shutouts during the week and helped the Broncos extend their winning streak to 14 games. He will be given more of impact role on the team now that the Broncos lost Deven Dubyk, who was recalled to the WHL. Alex Rajotte of La Ronge, Matt Smidt of Notre Dame and Dawson MacAuley of Yorkton were the runners up.

The Broncos were the big movers in the CJHL rankings, as they moved from 18th to 10th. The North Stars dropped from sixth to 12th while Weyburn earned an honourable mention.
